Diyarbakır welcomes Zare!

Diyarbakır welcomes Zare!

Considered as the first film that represents Kurds in cinema, Zare’s Diyarbakır screenings took place with the organization of Diyarbakır Arts Center and in cooperation with !fistanbul, Armenian National Archive and Anadolu Kültür.

One of the earliest silent examples of Armenian cinema shot in 1926 by Hamo Beknazarian, Zare’s screenings drew great interest from Diyarbakır and the region. After a single screening in 2011 edition of !fistanbul on Februry 19, 2011, Diyarbakır screenings were organized on 27-28 February at Diyarbakır Avrupa Theater, and received exceptional enthusiasm from more than 300 spectators who filled the theater standing and many more who couldn’t get in. Similarly to the !fistanbul occasion in Istanbul, Zare’s screening in Diyarbakır was accompanied by the live improvised music of great Kurdish harpist Tara Jaff, and the presentation of London Kurdish Film Festival Director Mustafa Gündoğdu, who mentioned the significance of further screenings of films from the Armenian National Archive about Kurdish people. In addition to Turkish subtitles, the film is screened with Kawa Nemir’s Kurdish translation of subtitles, particularly done for Diyarbakır screenings. Besides interested filmgoers, Kurdish writers and artists, and a large number of audiences from Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality attended Zare’s screenings, including the Diyarbakır Mayor, Osman Baydemir.
